A short history into the game known as Bingo
The game of bingo can be traced back to the 1530’s to an Italian lottery, called "Lo Giuoco del Lotto D'Italia,” which is still played today. When Italy was united in 1530, the Italian National Lottery Lo Giuoco del Lotto d'Italia was organized, and has been held, almost without pause, at weekly intervals to this date. Today the Italian State lottery is indispensable to the government's budget, with a yearly contribution in excess of 75 million dollars. It showed up in France in the late 1770’s as a game called "Le Lotto" which was played by rich French men. From there it moved on to a German version, which was used in the 1800's to educate children in math, history and spelling.Even in today's highly competitive toy and game market, Bingo is still strong; Milton Bradley sells a bingo game featuring the Sesame Street Muppets. The game is designed to provide children ages 3 to 6 a little fun while, at the same time, teaching them to count and recognize numbers.
It was introduced in North America in 1929 at a fair in Atlanta and was known as “Beono”. A New York toy salesman Edwin S. Lowe renamed it "bingo" after he overheard someone accidentally yell "bingo" instead of "beano". Lowe saw the craze and started his company which instantly became successful. Bingo could have been a trademark but Lowe decided to charge his competitors $1 a year to use the Bingo name. So the name then became generic but popular as ever.
A priest from a church in Pennsylvania approached Lowe when his church became in financial trouble to use the game to raise funds for the church. However, problems developed immediately when it was found that each game produced half a dozen or more winners.Lower immediately hired a man named Carl Leffler to help him build the number of combinations in bingo cards. By 1930 there were over 6,000 different bingo cards. Bingo swept the continent as people began using it as a fundraisers for churches. By 1934 there was around 10,000 games played a week and in the present more than $90 million dollars are spent on bingo each week in North America alone.
